Quick Introduction

Welcome to the Guavaberry blog! While we are undergoing the post Irma rebuilding process you can follow along with our progress, read about how our staff are doing, and general updates on Virgin Gorda.

Today we are 71 days post category 5 hurricane Irma. It has been an uphill battle with lots of tears but also lots of laughs. Each day brings new challenges that we never thought we would have to think about.

Many properties on the island have laid off their staff, but many of ours have been with us for 20+ years so there is no way we could imagine doing that to them. But what work is there for housekeepers to do if we have no houses to clean or guests to take care of you ask? Well, when 225 mph winds rip off roofs and shingles… the debris doesn’t just blow away. So, our lovely hard working housekeeping ladies are out in the field… literally…. picking up said debris. They are as amazing with rakes as they are with brooms!

Our maintenance team has also banded together, removing all of the heavy debris so the ladies can come behind them with their rakes for the smaller stuff. Our grounds are now looking more like they used to, and flowers now have a chance to flourish again. Leaves are back on the trees and the grass is growing like crazy! The rains over the past weeks have helped with that, even though we cringe with each drop knowing that it will just do more damage to the houses that have no roofs.

The office ladies are ticking along too as usual, though nothing about their work now is “usual”. Never have we had the heart wrenching task of cancelling all of the reservations month by month. The “newbie” files are filled with questions, excitement and anticipation for their once upcoming trip. Flipping through them just saddens us because we were so looking forward to meeting each and every one of them, and putting a face to the name. Then we get to the “repeat” guests and we have to pause a minute before we proceed. How can we possibly NOT see these guests this year? What ever will we do? We have seen these folks every year for the past 5, 10 and sometimes 20 plus years! But move on we must… and the emails we receive back with warm encouraging words just fill our hearts. Here’s to 2019 and a spectacular reunion with everyone!

  8. I follow every word and picture I can find about rebuilding. I appreciate all the communication, since after 31 years I can not get to VG this year. I miss the beauty, the serenity and most of all, I miss all the special people that I love.

  10. Having been there since the beginning when we were unable to get a flight out of San Juan starting 3 days prior to Irma and hunkering down in the office (the fortress built by Ludwig), we know first hand the GSB devastation. However, your strength and courage to keep moving forward since day one has been an inspiration to all of us…..all of you are VG Strong! All of us who love you and Guavaberry will keep sending positive energy, love, strength, and courage as you rebuild. We look forward to returning to a place that has become a part of our hearts.

  11. Thanks so much for sharing this. We had lunch with Betsy and Todd Rawley today and you, the wonderful Guavaberry ladies and staff, were all in our conversation. We also can’t imagine going a year plus without seeing all of you and the January-February crew. You have all been a part of our lives for such a long time and we will miss you.

Keep up the great work and updates!

I tried to reach your office shortly after the storm on the hopes that perhaps there might be some communications, and have been worried since. BVI and Guavaberry is my happy place on the planet. We will look forward to booking for the ‘grand opening’!!
